Manage Tooth Pain

Toothaches are frustrating & painful! We’ll get you the relief you need.

I Have a Toothache, What Do I Do?

Tooth pain and toothaches happen for many reasons. First & foremost, schedule an appointment so a dentist can tell you exactly why the pain is happening. It could be minor, like a cavity, or it could be something more complicated.

Pain Could Mean Many Things

The most common reason is due to cavities or tooth decay, but it could also be an abscess, an infection at the root of your tooth

Try This for Instant Relief

While you wait for your appointment, try swishing 1/2 spoon of table salt & water, hydrogen peroxide, or taking ibuprofen

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the FAQ we’ve received from our patients. Have additional questions or concerns, call us: 203-324-6171

There may be quite a few reasons why your tooth hurts. The most common reason is due to cavities or tooth decay. Another reason why your tooth may hurt is because of an abscess. An abscess is an infection that is at the root of the tooth, causing a throbbing pain that commonly is described as “excruciating.”

In general, it refers to pain experienced in or around your tooth or jaw. In most instances, though, it refers specifically to the condition of the tooth. Your teeth are made up of two basic parts, the crown, and the root. The root is the portion of the tooth below the gumline that encases the pulp (nerve) of the tooth. Any inflammation of the nerve results in uncomfortable warning signals that “something is not right.” In severe cases you may need a root canal.

One of the best things that you can do to help in relieving the pain is to take an over-the-counter pain medication. This could be ones such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or another that you typically take. This can greatly help the pain, and help you to get to the date of your dentist appointment.

No! Another thing that many people find helpful is to do a saltwater rinse. If you add a 1/2 spoon of table salt and 8 ounces of water, simply swish water in your mouth and then spit it out. Be sure to not swallow the rinse, or this could upset your stomach.

Another tip that you can do if your face is swollen is to put an ice pack or cold compress on your cheek – this will also help to ease the pain, especially if your tooth has been shipped or is loose.

Hydrogen peroxide is another option. It can help with healing the bacteria as well as relieving some of the discomfort that you could be experiencing. The best way to do this is to swish a mouthful of hydrogen peroxide solution in your mouth, and then spit it out.

Of course, a hydrogen peroxide option is only for swishing. Never swallow the hydrogen peroxide!

Of course, every case is different, and there is not a specific answer until you have a visit with a dental professional. However, if the pain is manageable and does not disrupt your day-to-day life, waiting until your appointment with your dentist will be fine.

If the pain continues to get worse, reach out your local emergency dentist to schedule an appointment.

The best way to keep your smile healthy is to brush your teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste, floss your teeth daily, limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks, avoid smoking, and visit your dentist twice a year for preventative checkups and professional cleanings. These can help you address any dental issues right at the beginning stages so you don’t necessarily have to ever experience the undesirable symptoms of a full-blown toothache.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed here this morning and I don’t think it would’ve been possible for me to have a better, more comfortable, and nerve-free removal. The front desk team was welcoming and checked me in quickly. Eileen, who walked me to the room and assisted me after surgery was amazing and answered all follow up questions thoroughly ranging from when to take the medication I was prescribed to post-op bleeding and everything in between. Cledin and Estafania, whom assisted Dr. Cohen during the procedure, were also amazing. They ensured I was comfortable while the teeth were being extracted and assisted me with all my needs whilst in the room. Finally, I owe a huge thank you to Dr. Cohen. I was expecting a very slow and painful process. It was quite literally the opposite. I didn’t even realize he extracted two of my teeth and for the other two I felt only mild pressure. Nothing unbearable in the slightest. His instructions were clear and the operation was completed quickly yet very thoroughly. I am now five hours post-op and feel great. I couldn’t recommend this place enough for this type of procedure especially for those with fears of the dentist.

Honestly, this dental office saved my teeth. I was in a lot of pain and they were the only ones who were willing to accommodate me. I walked in and everything was a breeze. They literally hold your hand every step of the way. When I got my x-rays done, I honestly didn’t really realize the condition of my teeth. Dr Roth assured me that I came in at the right time and I was in good hands. Both him and his assistant Daniella, fit me into their schedule and worked to get me out of pain right away. He told me the things I need to get done but gave me a timeline keeping in mind the financial aspect of it. Call this practice if you need anything done regarding your teeth. They will put your mind right at ease.

My wife had been going to this dentist and I was going to a different dentist. I had never been to her dentist's office. I had to go with her for an emergency with one of her teeth. As soon as I walked in I was impressed. The faculty...the office....the atmosphere are very welcoming. Everyone is super nice. I immediately switched dentists and couldn't be happier. From Paula to Christy to all the Dentists and employees in this office make this place a keeper. I'll be a patient for the rest of my life.

I was referred to Dental Care Stamford by my girlfriend and it was the best decision I have made in awhile. Mimi helped me along the way with everything I needed to do get me on track of a healthy mouth. I don't have insurance so having a couple options made me feel comfortable in deciding a plan that best fits me. The whole staff made feel at home and welcomed me with open arms. I also like that they are very flexible with scheduling which was very important today. I would recommend 10/10

A few weeks ago, I had an emergency and had to call for an appointment. I was experiencing so much pain. Given my circumstances, I was not able to go to the dentist in over 10 years. I was immediately scheduled to meet with Dr. Simon, who showed a genuine concern for my dental health. I felt very safe and relieved to have a dentist who really wanted to help.During my initial visit, I found out that I had all these other complications. However, Paula, a treatment coordinator at the practice, had helped me so much in creating a plan that really worked for me. She would walk me through all my procedures and would check in with me whenever I visited, even when we were not scheduled to meet. She has ALWAYS looked out for me.Joanne, one of the hygienists at the practice, was very thorough and patient with me. She also cracks me up.The folks at the front desk, as well as all the dental assistants, were very courteous, patient, kind, and funny. I left every appointment feeling so much better.Everyone made me feel comfortable and welcome. I definitely recommend this practice to anyone who is looking for a great dental care experience.

Went to there last weekend, diagnose 9 cavities but actually 6. They estimated each filling costs over 300 bucks(total around 1600, don’t know why is it so expensive). I might look rich but not stupid, lol. You should do better job on those new clients.
