Know the Signs: How to Advocate for Your Gum Health and Prevent Disease

1. Gums Look Ok: The gums may appear fine, but looks can be deceiving. When the dentist or hygienist uses a periodontal probe to measure under the gum line, it can reveal bone loss and advanced gum disease! Adults should have their gums professionally evaluated and cleaned at least 2-4 times a year to maintain oral health.

3. Bone Loss Evident: If you have gum pockets and bleeding, cleanings alone aren’t enough. You’ll need professional gum treatments and improved home care to manage your condition. Without proper care, the situation can worsen, leading to more severe issues and tooth loss.

2. Probe Will Measure: It’s vital to know your pocket numbers. They should be 2-3 mm deep with no bleeding when measured under the gum line. Each tooth has 6 measurement points, totaling 168 for all 28 teeth. If more than 10 pockets are over 4 mm and bleed, it indicates gum disease. Keep track of your numbers at every dental exam—what you don’t know can cause harm!

4.Receding Gum Line: This x-ray shows a dotted line where the bone level should be if the gums were healthy. Due to periodontal disease, the bone has receded. As bone loss progresses, more germs and plaque accumulate, causing teeth to loosen and fail. Treatment is crucial to prevent tooth loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Your Questions

Treatment depends on the stage and severity of the disease:

  • Gingivitis: Improved oral hygiene, professional dental cleanings.
  • Mild to moderate periodontitis: Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), antibiotics.
  • Severe periodontitis: Surgical treatments like flap surgery, bone grafts, and tissue regeneration procedures

More information on some of these are included below.

1. Non-Surgical Treatments

Professional Dental Cleaning

  • Description: Regular cleanings to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline.
  • Indication: Recommended for gingivitis or as a preventive measure for periodontal disease.
  • Procedure: Dentists use specialized tools to remove tartar that cannot be eliminated by brushing and flossing alone

Scaling and Root Planing

  • Description: A deep-cleaning procedure to remove plaque and tartar from deep periodontal pockets and smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins.
  • Indication: Used for more severe cases of gum disease, particularly periodontitis.
  • Procedure: Typically performed under local anesthesia. Scaling removes tartar from below the gumline, while root planing smooths the roots to help the gums reattach

2. Surgical Treatments

Flap Surgery/Pocket Reduction Surgery

  • Description: Surgical procedure to reduce the depth of periodontal pockets.
  • Indication: Recommended for advanced periodontitis where non-surgical treatments are insufficient.
  • Procedure: The gums are lifted back to remove tartar, and the irregular surfaces of the damaged bone are smoothed to limit areas where disease-causing bacteria can hide. The gums are then placed back so that the tissue fits snugly around the tooth

Bone Grafts

  • Description: Used to replace bone destroyed by periodontal disease.
  • Indication: Suitable for patients with significant bone loss around the teeth.
  • Procedure: Bone grafts are made of fragments of your own bone, synthetic bone, or donated bone. They help restore the stability of the teeth by regenerating lost bone

Soft Tissue Grafts

  • Description: Procedure to cover exposed roots or develop gum tissue where it is absent due to excessive gingival recession.
  • Indication: Used for patients with receding gums.
  • Procedure: Tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth (palate) or another donor source and stitched in place to add tissue to the affected area

Bone Surgery

  • Description: Smoothing shallow craters in the bone due to moderate to advanced bone loss.
  • Indication: Used in advanced cases of periodontitis.
  • Procedure: After flap surgery, the bone around the teeth is reshaped to decrease the craters, making it harder for bacteria to collect and grow

3. Other Treatments

Antibiotics

  • Description: Used to control bacterial infection.
  • Indication: Can be used in conjunction with other treatments for periodontitis.
  • Procedure: Antibiotics can be topical (such as mouth rinses or gels placed in periodontal pockets) or oral (systemic antibiotics)

Laser Therapy

  • Description: A less invasive alternative to traditional surgery.
  • Indication: Used for patients who prefer a less invasive procedure.
  • Procedure: Laser therapy targets and removes diseased tissue, while preserving healthy tissue. It can also help reduce bleeding and swelling

Regenerative Procedures

  • Description: Techniques to stimulate the growth of new bone and tissue.
  • Indication: Used for severe periodontal disease where the bone and tissue have been lost.
  • Procedure: Includes bone grafts, tissue-stimulating proteins, and guided tissue regeneration
